Originally called the "City of Oaks" due to the large array of oak trees planted by its founder, Simon van der Stel, the town is named after him today.
A visit to the Stellenbosch Village Museum is always worthwhile. The museum features four houses from four different eras of the town’s history. Walking through these well-preserved colonial-style homes, you can see how life evolved in Stellenbosch over the years.
